The memories of strapping on a pair of worn roller skates and circling the hard wooden floor for hours is one kept in the minds of many in Lake. Those memories can’t be made by the younger generation, because on March 6, the Lake Roller Rink, located at 7892 W. Ludington Dr., Lake Station, is deemed a total loss after its roof caved‑in due to the weight of the snow piled on top of the structure.
The Lake Roller Rink has been a landmark in Lake since 1950 and had been closed up for the season and was for sale when the cave‑in happened.
There was no one in the building, no one was injured, but the owner isn’t sure if the insurance company will be able to cover the damage Mother Nature brought on.
This winter has been a brutal one with virtually no mid‑winter thaws causing the snow build up and deep frosts to cause many water line and roof cave‑in incidents this season.
Clare County Emergency Manager, Jerry Becker said in an email, “This winter has been brutal with roof collapses and frost heaves causing water line breaks etc.”
