Harrison Family Pharmacy has been in the works ever since MacLean’s independently owned pharmacy sold.
John Gross, owner of Clare’s Gateway Pharmacy and the Eagle Pharmacy in Farwell, heard of a want for a new independently owned pharmacy with the loss of the old one, and decided to branch out into Harrison.
“We opened the Gateway Pharmacy as another option,” Gross said, “so that people could have a choice.”
He also opened the pharmacy in Farwell because he had a lot of clients coming into the Gateway Pharmacy from Farwell and Lake, and decided that a location in Farwell would help better serve those customers.
Gross had hoped to open up the Harrison Family Pharmacy in December, but with the weather and other delays, the grand opening has been set for Monday, March 23.
The pharmacy has been open to the public for the past few weeks and it’s hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and closed on Sunday, just like the other two locations.
Gross wanted to keep the times consistent for now, but as he sees a need, they may be subject to change.
With just big chain stores to served the community’s pharmaceutical needs, Gross wanted to bring back a more personalized and small town feel, just like this other two locations.
“It will be the same personal/local and home town service that people just can’t get at a big chain,” Gross said.
Harrison Family Pharmacy is a full service pharmacy and those interested in switching over their prescriptions just needs to stop in and talk to the staff.
Gross said that with the extra space leftover in the building, at the corner of N. 2nd Street and Beech Street, that he will eventually be adding something that caters to the needs of the community.
“We will leave the space open for something else,” Gross said, “we’re just not sure what yet.”
Once he gets a feel for some niche thing that the Harrison community needs, he will add it on.
Gross has lived in Clare since 1982 when his parents moved to town and bought the Gateway Bowling Alley. And after graduating from Ferris State University in 1992, he moved to Farwell with his wife, Lisa.
Gross opened the Gateway Pharmacy in 2004 and in 2011 opened up the pharmacy/sweet shop in Farwell.
